Encounter the Arts

 

We believe that art generates new perspectives, enhances our sense of beauty, and fosters the potential for individual and social transformation. At Grace Farms, the arts are designed to deepen each person’s profound connection to community, architecture, and landscape within our 80-acre site. We present and commission works with individual artists while also collaborating with the arts sector to advance humanitarian causes.

 

Grace Farms presents year-round programming that brings together the visual, literary, and performing arts through site-responsive commissions, an ambitious music series in our 700-seat amphitheater, and groundbreaking exhibitions that explore global issues. We engage youth through educator-led studios and labs, support select artist residencies, offer program space grants to arts nonprofits, publish original works, and invite artists and galleries worldwide to join the Design for Freedom movement.

Music at Grace Farms

Grace Farms’ 700-seat indoor amphitheater is completely enclosed in glass and offers an immersion into the season. As you watch a world-class performance on stage, you’ll also see past the musician into the landscape to view birds migrating, leaves dancing in the wind, rain plummeting, and fog roll in.

The excellence of musicianship on stage inspires us to go beyond what we think is possible for ourselves. The nature inspires us a sense of awe, and reinforces our goal of creating peace in the world. Every event is crafted to foster connection, making music not just something to hear, but something to feel and share.

Acoustic Concerts

Grace Farms’ concert series invites audiences to experience the unamplified sound of acoustic instruments and voice—music in its most elemental form. Set against sweeping daytime views of nature through our glass-enclosed Sanctuary, each performance offers moments of resonance, inviting artists to respond to the vision and mission of Grace Farms while showcasing the artistry of their craft.

Our 2027 Music at Grace Farms programs feature Leslie Odom, Jr., Nemanja Radulović and Double Sens, Broadway Inspirational Voices, Derek Gripper and Alam Khan, Aoife O’Donovan with Eric & Colin Jacobsen, and Elizabeth Joy Roe with Arlen Hlusko.

Seasonal Music

Casual performances set in the Sanctuary take place during the holiday season, inviting families to drop in during their daily visit to delight in live music with full views of the peaceful winter landscape.

Architecture Around the World

At Grace Farms, architecture is more than design — it’s a quiet invitation to pause, reflect, and connect. Our SANAA-designed River building and Barns offer an open, transparent space that dissolves the boundaries between indoors and out, fostering a deeper sense of openness to one another and to the natural world.

This architecture reflects our core belief that space communicates. From the curve of a glass wall to the warmth of a shared table, every element is designed to support moments of peace, beauty, and belonging. These intentional spaces cultivate the conditions for collaboration, creativity, and a shared commitment to advancing good.

What begins here, through the power of thoughtful design, echoes far beyond our site, reminding us that the spaces we shape, in turn, shape us.

2027 Design for Freedom Summit

The Rest House Project

Last year, Grace Farms, Slade Architecture, and the woman-led Ketiara Cooperative set out to imagine a Rest House that supports Ketiara’s 1,700 farmers with ethical, sustainable shelter designed for learning and community.

As the project moved forward, an exceptionally rare storm changed everything.

Artist-in-Residence

The role of Grace Farms’ Artist-in-Residence is offered to select multidisciplinary artists and writers to immerse themselves in the River building and Barns, surrounding natural landscape, and our vibrant, global community of staff and visitors. Artists-in-Residence are encouraged to create new work inspired by the mission and vision of Grace Farms and, through a series of engagements and programs, share that work with the public. Past and present Artists-in-Residence include Carrie Mae Weems, James Florio (current), Meredith Monk, Nasreen Sheikh, and Arlen Hlusko (current).

Grace Farms is honored to feature James Florio, photographer, and Arlen Hlusko, cellist, as current 2025-2026 Artists-in-Residence. Learn more about the projects they are working on at Grace Farms, and upcoming opportunities to connect with them below.

On February 21, Arlen Hlusko presents a winter recital, “InCommon Folk,” inspired by the idea of community music. Developed for Grace Farms, this one-of-a-kind program offers an exploration into how music responds to the trials and tribulations of life, and helps bring people together in community. Arlen Hlusko

Canadian cellist Arlen Hlusko is an internationally acclaimed artist celebrated for her expressive depth and fearless virtuosity. As cellist of the Bang on a Can All-Stars and a versatile collaborator with ensembles like The Knights and Dolce Suono, she brings dynamic energy to a wide range of music.

James Florio

James Florio is a photographer focused on the built environment and the life surrounding it. He works slowly whenever possible, visiting a place repeatedly to gain a greater understanding of it and to deliver a thoughtful and profound interpretation.

There are four permanent artworks on view that continually inform our work of place-making. Complementing these installations are two interactive exhibits that showcase the innovative and impactful work of Grace Farms. Together, they offer a dynamic and immersive experience, inviting visitors to engage deeply with our commitment to creating more grace and peace in the world.

Artworks

Since 2015, Grace Farms has welcomed site-responsive works by internationally renowned artists whose practices reflect questions of time, perception, and our shared humanity. These permanent and commissioned works invite reflection, spark dialogue, and deepen the experience of SANAA’s architecture and the surrounding landscape.

Exhibits

Exhibits at Grace Farms offer a contemplative lens into the values that shape this cultural and humanitarian center. Rooted in design, ethics, and nature, these multidisciplinary installations invite visitors to reflect on our shared responsibilities — how the spaces we inhabit, the materials we use, and the stories we tell can contribute to a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world. Set within the River building and Barns, the exhibits create meaningful moments of pause, discovery, and connection.

Practicing Series
2016 – 2019

In 2016, we introduced Practicing, a process-focused series of workshops, projects, and programs that applied rigorous thinking and creating to questions framed by multiple perspectives. Practicing workshops inspired projects in various forms including dance, music, poetry, and installation.
