DESCRIPTION:Following our November Community Dinner\, Grace Farms Foundation will present The Langston Hughes Project\, a concert performance of “Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz”\, one of Hughes’ literary masterworks.  Led by trumpeter Ron McCurdy\,  The Langston Hughes Project embodies the poet’s testimony to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at home and abroad at the beginning of the 1960s. Through this special event\, Grace Farms Foundation joins in commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hughes’ death.\n\nFeatured Musicians\nRon McCurdy (trumpet & vocals)\nNoah Jackson (upright bass)\nJulius Rodriguez (drums)\nYuma Sung (piano)\nKenyon Adams (vocals)\n\nRace & American Memory is an ongoing free series launched in 2015 examining race and its impact on American identity and moral integrity. Through the program\, the Foundation examines the ways in which Americans comprehend and recall U.S. history.

Dr. Katharine Henderson\, President of Auburn Seminary will lead a panel discussion featuring nationally renowned faith leaders and Auburn Seminary Senior Fellows Sister Simone Campbell\, Executive Director of NETWORK\, and Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis\, senior minister of Middle Collegiate Church\, as they wrestle with questions of faith\, gender\, and race in relation to growing economic inequality in America. \nClick here to register for our September Community Dinner\, which will precede the program. \n  \nThe Rev. Dr. Katharine Henderson is president of Auburn Seminary in New York\, a multifaith leadership development and research institute that equips bold and resilient leaders of faith and moral courage to build communities\, bridge divides\, pursue justice\, and heal the world. She is author of God’s Troublemakers: How Women of Faith are Changing the World and released a TEDx talk\, “Letting God Out of the Box\,” in February 2017. \nSister Simone Campbell is the executive director of NETWORK\, the Catholic social justice lobby founded by Catholic Sisters. She is the author of A Nun on the Bus: How All of Us Can Create Hope\, Change\, and Community and has led four national Nuns on the Bus tours since 2012\, focused on issues such as economic justice\, immigration reform\, and civic engagement. Sister Campbell is a religious leader\, attorney\, and poet with extensive experience in public policy and advocacy for systemic change. She lobbies on issues of economic justice and peace-building in Washington\, D.C. \nThe Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis is senior minister of Middle Collegiate Church in New York City. Dr. Lewis is a nationally sought after preacher and activist on racial reconciliation\, LGBTI equality\, and economic justice. Dr. Lewis launched and hosted the MSNBC.com program Just Faith\, featuring inclusive\, interreligious\, unorthodox conversations about culture and current events through the lens of progressive faith and spirituality. She co-founded The Middle Project\, a leadership training institute for progressive faith leaders and social justice activists. Her books include The Power of Stories: A Guide for Leaders in Multi-Racial and Multi-Cultural Congregations.

Kendi | July 21st\, Grace Farms Foundation will welcome the winner of the 2016 National Book Award for Non-Fiction\, author and scholar\, Ibram X. Kendi\, to lecture on the subject of his acclaimed book\, Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America. \nOn November 17th\, the series will culminate with Ask Your Mama\, a special live jazz and poetry performance of the Langston Hughes Project led by trumpeter Ron McCurdy\, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Hughes’ death.

SUMMARY:Practicing Silence
DESCRIPTION:Practicing Silence is a collaborative artistic work-in-process performance that will be shared with the public. The performance will feature dancers from the New York City Ballet\, with choreography by Silas Farley\, and music composed by Pornchanok Kanchanabanca\, featuring jazz pianist and drummer Julius Rodriguez and poet Ilya Kaminsky\, with bassist and cellist Noah Jackson leading the Nu Muse Quartet. \nThe Practicing series at Grace Farms brings together artists from diverse disciplines to participate in contemplative discourse and a collaborative creative process that leads to the creation of a new performative work that is shared with the public. Over the course of five days at Grace Farms\, invited artists respond to universal subjects such as empathy\, awe\, joy\, and silence after delving into texts from related disciplines. The resulting work is performed at a work-in-process showing that is open to the public free of charge. \nThe series is curated and led by Kenyon Adams\, Arts Initiative Director at Grace Farms Foundation\, who seeks to provide artists with the opportunity to develop new\, collaborative\, and site-specific works at Grace Farms. The Practicing series began in February of 2016 with Practicing Empathy\, followed by Practicing Awe in July. Participants from the first two workshops have included: Bill T. Jones\, Gallim Dance\, Jake Goldbas\, Cindertalk\, and vocalists from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music\, among other artists. Practicing Joy is scheduled for September 2017.

DESCRIPTION:Grace Farms Foundation welcomes the opportunity for open\, gracious discourse with Greg Zehner and Geshe Dhargey\, a Buddhist Monk from the Tibetan Buddhist Center for Universal Peace for the purposes of greater understanding of Buddhism as philosophy/religion and its life-application. Do Ngak Kunphen Ling Tibetan Buddhist Center for Universal Peace (DNKL) promotes peaceful living through teachings\, study\, meditation\, and community service. Audience questions are encouraged. \nGreg is a former partner of Goldman Sachs who became a pastor after leaving the firm in 2000. He holds a masters and bachelors in electrical engineering from MIT and a masters of divinity from Yale. Greg lived in New Canaan\, Connecticut for ten years before moving to Park City\, Utah\, where he currently resides. \nLight refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:The Refugee Crisis & U.S. Response
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the important efforts surrounding the refugee crisis in the United States\, and the response from organizations including The International Institute of Connecticut (IICONN)\, in a conversation moderated by Grace Farms Foundation Justice Initiative Director\, Krishna Patel. The panel will include informative perspectives from Claudia Connor\, the President & CEO of IICONN\, as well as a resettled Syrian refugee from our local community. \nIICONN’s Refugee Services Program assists adults and families who have fled war and persecution in their home countries\, and in many cases spent decades in refugee camps. Founded in 1918\, IICONN is a statewide not-for-profit human services agency that addresses the need to provide new immigrants and refugees in Connecticut with services to help them become self-sufficient\, integrated\, and contributing members of the community. The organization focuses on helping those individuals who face significant barriers to adjusting to their new environment by offering legal\, social\, linguistic\, and educational programs to help them overcome these obstacles.
