SUMMARY:Amplifying Equality
DESCRIPTION:With the health and safety of our visitors\, staff\, and community in mind\, Grace Farms has temporarily closed to the public as of March 9 and remains closed. All events and programs scheduled during that time are cancelled or will be rescheduled for a later date. \nDue to the temporary closure\, we are postponing Amplifying Equality. \nAlthough Grace Farms is temporarily closed\, the work of Grace Farms Foundation continues through our work to serve the needs of our community during these challenging times. Learn more about our work to donate food to our neighbors in New Canaan and surrounding communities. \nWe look forward to re-opening as soon as possible and welcoming you to future programs. Please check our website and subscribe to our newsletter for additional updates. \n\nJoin Annette Richardson\, Senior Advisor to the United Nations\, for a conversation about the local\, national\, and international models of gender equality that are driving change in today’s world. \nAt a time when bold and global conversations about achieving gender parity are frequent\, female empowerment has become a catch-all phrase utilized by communities\, corporations\, and governments alike to draw in audiences. But is the rhetoric aligning to movement\, action\, and change? To what extent are we positioning ourselves for actual\, rapid\, and sustainable advancement – and what are the ways in which we are stalling? How can we convince everyone that gender equality is for the good of all humankind\, not just females? This panel will explore how the action we take today will have ripple effects for the future and offer tangible ways for us all to harness our individual and collective power to upend systems of oppression. \n

SUMMARY:In Pursuit of Flourishing Life | Is College the Key?
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Dr. Matthew Croasmun\, Grace Farms Foundation’s Faith Initiative Director and Lecturer of Humanities at Yale University\, Dr. Karen E. Eshoo\, Head of School at King School\, and Dr. Frank Bartolomeo\, Director of Adolescent Services at Silver Hill Hospital\, lead a discussion about how the college prep and application processes can reveal and shape both parents’ and students’ visions of flourishing life. \nAs colleges become ever more competitive\, the admissions process can generate an enormous amount of pressure and anxiety. In the midst of these pressures\, the initially motivating desire to pursue a college education – a flourishing life – can be subverted. Hear from different perspectives and explore how we can better help young people enter this next stage of their lives equipped to flourish not just in their endeavors\, but as human beings.

SUMMARY:Ending Violence Against Women | A Conversation with Dr. Denis Mukwege
DESCRIPTION:Join 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Denis Mukwege and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Nicholas Kristof as they discuss the urgent need to combat sexual violence against women and girls in conflict zones. \nDr. Mukwege\, a world-renowned gynecological surgeon\, founded Panzi Hospital in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1999 to provide the women in his community with access to high-quality maternal health care. Many of his first patients\, however\, were not delivering mothers\, but instead women and girls who were seeking medical treatment following brutal rapes at the hands of warring militia groups. As the violence against women and girls escalated drastically\, Dr. Mukwege and his staff at Panzi Hospital dedicated themselves to treating complex and often life-threatening gynecological injuries. Since then\, Panzi Hospital has earned an impressive reputation for its best-in-class service for victims of sexual violence. \nJoin us as we examine why rape and torture continue to be used as weapons of war in conflicts across the globe\, and learn how we can demand justice for survivors and an end to gender-based violence. \n  \nOn-site parking at Grace Farms will be available. Once we have reached our capacity\, overflow parking will be provided at Oakridge Common\, with shuttle service running throughout the evening. \n\n  \nDr. Denis Mukwege is a world-renowned gynecological surgeon who is the founder and medical director of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu\, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). He founded the hospital in 1999 to provide the women in his community with access to high-quality maternal health care. Many of his first patients\, however\, were not delivering mothers\, but instead women who were seeking treatment following brutal rapes. This had a profound effect on his life and career\, inspiring him to become an advocate against sexual violence in conflict in DRC and around the globe.  \nSince 1999\, Dr. Mukwege and his staff have helped to care for more than 85\,000 women suffering severe gynecological trauma\, including more than 55\,000 survivors of sexual violence. He founded Panzi Foundation DRC in 2008 to implement a holistic healing model that combines medical treatment with psycho-social care\, community-reintegration support\, and access to legal services. In 2009\, he co-founded Panzi Foundation USA to amplify international fundraising efforts to support the hospital and its after-care programs.  \nDr. Mukwege has been fearless in his efforts to increase protections for women and to advocate that those responsible for sexual violence be brought to justice. In addition\, he has been a tireless advocate against sexual violence as a weapon of war around the globe. He co-founded the Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation advance these efforts by connecting survivors in a worldwide movement\, advocating for a system for global reparations\, and expanding holistic healing to other areas of conflict.  \nIn 2018\, he was named a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end sexual violence as a weapon of war\, alongside Nadia Murad\, a Yazidi survivor and advocate. In addition\, he was recognized in 2018 by Bill & Melinda Gates as a “Hero in the Field\,” named to the TIME Magazine 100 in 2016\, and received the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought from the European Parliament in 2014. He currently serves as an advisor for the G7 Advisory Committee For Gender Equality. \n  \nNicholas D. Kristof\, a columnist for The New York Times since 2001\, is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner who writes op-ed columns that appear twice a week. \nAfter joining The New York Times in 1984\, initially covering economics\, he served as a Times correspondent in Los Angeles\, Hong Kong\, Beijing and Tokyo. He later was Associate Managing Editor of the Times for Sunday editions. \nIn 1990 Mr. Kristof and his wife\, Sheryl WuDunn\, then also a Times journalist\, won a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of China’s Tiananmen Square democracy movement. They were the first married couple to win a Pulitzer for journalism. Mr. Kristof won a second Pulitzer in 2006\, for commentary for what the judges called “his graphic\, deeply reported columns that\, at personal risk\, focused attention on genocide in Darfur and that gave voice to the voiceless in other parts of the world.”  \nMr. Kristof has also won the George Polk Award\, the Overseas Press Club award\, the Michael Kelly award\, the Online News Association award and the American Society of Newspaper Editors award. He has won various humanitarian awards including the Anne Frank Award\, the Jan Karski award\, and in 2016 was named by the U.N. as a “hero in the global campaign against violent extremism.” Mr. Kristof  was the first blogger on The New York Times website\, the first to contribute a video to The Times website\, and the first to file on the Times Snapchat account. He has more Twitter followers than any print reporter worldwide\, and he also has large followings on Facebook and Google+ as well as a channel on YouTube. A documentary about him\, “Reporter\,” executive produced by Ben Affleck\, aired on HBO in 2010. \nIn his column\, Mr. Kristof was an early opponent of the Iraq war\, and among the first to raise doubts about WMD in Iraq and about losing ground to the Taliban in Afghanistan. His columns have often focused on global health and poverty and he has also written often about human trafficking and women’s rights. \nMr. Kristof and Ms. WuDunn are authors of the best-selling books A Path Appears\, Half the Sky\, Thunder from the East\, and China Wakes. SUMMARY:Protecting the Amazon | Tribes on the Edge
DESCRIPTION:It is estimated that the Amazon produces 20% of the world’s oxygen\, and releases 55 gallons of water into the Atlantic Ocean every second. With no deforestation\, mining\, or poaching permitted on indigenous land\, the last few tribes living there are the frontline guardians of an ecosystem crucial for life all over the world. Céline Cousteau—filmmaker\, environmentalist\, and granddaughter of the legendary Jacques Cousteau—has spent the past 5 years respectfully documenting\, filming\, and curating the story of all the Indigenous Peoples of the Javari to help them tell their story to the world. \nJoin us as Céline presents an exclusive screening of her new film and impact campaign\, Tribes on the Edge. This raw and evocative documentary reveals the daily struggles of the last few remaining tribes who find themselves fighting for survival in the Amazon. Discover the importance of protecting this invaluable area of our planet\, hear the deeply moving stories of the indigenous peoples who safeguard it on our behalf\, and learn some of the simple things that you can do to help.  \n\nAbout Tribes on the Edge \nThe story is set in an indigenous territory called the Vale do Javari in the Brazilian Amazon which spans 85\,000 Sq KMs (the size of Portugal). This area is home to 6 recognized tribes\, plus the largest concentration of un-contacted indigenous peoples in the Amazon. The Javari has been listed as ‘irreplaceable” by the IUCN because of its incredible biodiversity. Because there is no deforestation in the Amazon where there are indigenous territories\, their presence provides a barrier to the destruction of the ecosystem and its flora and fauna. \nThe peoples of the Javari face risks to their survival as a result of numerous threats: contact with outsiders has brought in diseases that decimate their peoples\, illegal activities such as hunting\, fishing and gold mining are a constant assault\, and the government is slowly dismantling all protection of their land and their human rights. Each day these 5000 indigenous warriors are fighting to protect their home. In effect\, they act a crucial barrier to deforestation and thus a stronghold for climate change mitigation and preservation of biodiversity. \nHumans and nature are intimately interconnected. Where there is environmental destruction\, humans suffer. In the Brazilian Amazon\, where there are indigenous communities\, there is no deforestation. If they vanish\, we lose the guardians of vital ecosystems and thus may lose that ecosystem as a result. This film has grown into a movement driven by a passionate effort to enact tangible impact through the Action\, Communication and Education (ACE) initiatives. Tribes on the Edge will remind us all that our survival depends on our actions – to support and protect the people and the ecosystems they safeguard for the benefit of us all. \n  \nCéline Cousteau is a humanitarian and environmental activist working with a variety of mediums that range from documentaries to art\, from consulting with corporations and foundations to public speaking. Each form shares the same message of interconnectivity between humans and the natural world. As a documentary film director\, producer\, and presenter\, Céline is the founder and executive director of CauseCentric Productions\, creating cause-focused content. Extending her family legacy and her expertise\, Céline co-founded The Outdoor Film Fellowship\, a nonprofit program whose mission is to empower young the next generation of filmmakers\, creatives\, and activists to inspire change through leadership\, film\, and the arts. Céline is ambassador for the TreadRight Foundation\, on the board of directors of the National Aquarium in Baltimore\, and the advisory boards of The Himalayan Consensus and Marine Construction Technologies. Her previous work has included being Guest Designer for Swarovski and Member of the World Economic ForumCouncil on Oceans. With a degree in psychology and a masters in Intercultural Relations\, Céline is fluent in three languages. \n  \nphotos © Michael Clark

SUMMARY:For the Life of the World | A Conversation with Miroslav Volf and Matthew Croasmun
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with world-renowned theologian Miroslav Volf and co-author Matthew Croasmun about their new book For the Life of the World: Theology that Makes a Difference. Hear about their research and examination of what constitutes a flourishing life\, and discover how we can meet the cultural challenges of an ever-changing world. \n  \nAbout the book | For the Life of the World: Theology that Makes a Difference by Miroslav Volf and Matthew Croasmun \nThe question of what makes a life worth living is more vital now than ever. In today’s pluralistic\, post-secular world\, universal values are dismissed as mere matters of private opinion\, and the question of what constitutes a flourishing life–for ourselves\, our neighbors\, and the planet as a whole–is neglected in our universities\, our churches\, and our culture at large. Although we increasingly have the technology to do almost anything\, we have little sense of what is truly worth accomplishing. \nIn this provocative new contribution to public theology\, world-renowned theologian Miroslav Volf (named “America’s New Public Intellectual” by Scot McKnight on his Jesus Creed blog) and Matthew Croasmun explain that the intellectual tools needed to rescue us from our present malaise and meet our new cultural challenge are the tools of theology. A renewal of theology is vital to help us articulate compelling visions of the good life\, find our way through the maze of contested questions of value\, and answer the fundamental question of what makes a life worth living. \n  \n
