DESCRIPTION:Step into the Sanctuary for a jazz concert from the James Carter Quartet featuring James Carter (saxophones)\, Gerard Gibbs (piano)\, Lonnie Plaxico (bass)\, and Kahlil Kwame Bell (drums). \nJames Carter’s lifetime of inventive work\, reflective of the way he’s mastered a multitude of styles and cultivated an uncanny knowledge of jazz history\, has consistently pushed the boundaries of what the saxophone can do. \nA dynamic saxophonist\, Carter’s music beautifully blends high-velocity solos and soft\, warm melodies\, weaving together divergent impulses. His impressive recording catalogue includes such albums as Chasing the Gypsy\, an engaging lyrical session inspired by the unforgettable collaboration between Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli; Layin’ the Cut\, a collection of songs melding funk and electronic sounds\, inspired by the iconic guitarist\, Jimi Hendrix; Gardenias for Lady Day that pays a heartfelt tribute to Billie Holiday; and recently\, James Carter’s Elektrik Outlet\, where he explores a new groove\, shifting his sax into a keen array of electronics and pedals. \nOur Members are invited to join us beforehand\, from 6 to 7:30 pm\, for a reception. \nAbout Voices of Culture\nVoices of Culture is an unforgettable concert and conversation series exploring beauty in different musical traditions. Bobby Sanabria Multiverse Big Band takes the Sanctuary stage on Saturday\, September 30th for our next Voices of Culture concert. \nSeven-time Grammy nominee Bobby Sanabria is a noted drummer\, percussionist\, composer\, arranger\, activist\, and a bandleader renowned throughout New York’s boroughs and beyond. As a drummer\, he has recorded and performed with legends\, including the “Godfather of Afro-Cuban Jazz\,” Mario Bauzá. \nSanabria is the Co-Artistic Director of the Bronx Music Heritage Center and is part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz Academy\, as well as The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall. He has conducted and performed as a soloist with orchestras including the WDR Big Band\, The Airmen of Note\, The U.S. Jazz Ambassadors\, and many more. Sanabria hosts WBGO’s Latin Jazz Cruise program.  \nVoices of Culture is a standout concert series curated by our Music Director\, Marcus G. Miller\nSeptember 30\, 2023: Voices of Culture | Bobby Sanabria’s Multiverse Big Band Concert\n\n  \n\nJoin us in the Sanctuary this July for a summer blues concert featuring King Solomon Hicks\, a guitarist\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and composer hailing from Harlem\, New York. \nContinuing throughout the year\, our musical moment concert series began in February with a winter jazz performance by multi-instrumentalist\, Irwin Hall. \nKing Solomon Hicks is a blues guitarist\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and composer from Harlem\, NY. He won the 2021 Blues Music Awards for Best Emerging Artist for his debut album\, Harlem (2020)\, produced by Grammy Award-winner Kirk Yano. \nSolomon was WXPN’s “Artist To Watch” for August 2020. He has performed on KISS Kruise V\, and Joe Bonamassa’s Blues Alive at Sea. He has shared the stage with Tony Bennett\, Jeff Beck\, Ringo Starr\, Beth Hart\, George Thorogood & the Destroyers\, Mavis Staples\, and Robert Cray\, among others. \nA member of the Blues Foundation in Memphis\, Solomon has judged the International Blues Challenge and is a supporter of young musicians and The Blues Foundation.
