SUMMARY:The Gravity of Joy: A Story of Being Lost and Found with Author Rev. Dr. Angela W. Gorrell
DESCRIPTION:LIVE ZOOM EVENT \n“Joy has a mysterious capacity to be felt alongside sorrow and even—sometimes most especially—in the midst of suffering.” \nJoin us for a Zoom conversation with Faith Initiative Director\, Dr. Matthew Croasmun and Rev. Dr. Angela W. Gorrell\, who will discuss her latest book The Gravity of Joy: A Story of Being Lost and Found. Gorrell contextualizes her search for Christian joy within her personal experience of loss\, and ultimately the larger societal need for joy as a counteragent to the despair that is all too prevalent in the twenty-first century. Her work articulates a vision for community that\, in the midst of tragedy\, comes together in the search for joy. \n\nOur Books on Faith & Meaning series consists of monthly presentations introducing selections from the Faith & Meaning section of the Grace Farms Library. Spanning multiple religious and philosophical traditions\, both ancient and contemporary\, these texts encourage us to think critically about the meaning in our lives.

SUMMARY:Planting with Purpose
DESCRIPTION:  \n“Restoring native plant habitat is vital to preserving biodiversity. By creating a native plant garden\, each patch of habitat becomes part of a collective effort to nurture and sustain the living landscape for birds and other animals.” \n– Audubon\n  \nJoin us for a virtual conversation about how to successfully grow native plants inside your home\, on your patio\, or in your yard. Hear from Alexi and Brendan Coffey\, Founders of Steward\, and Penn Marchael\, a Native Meadows Expert and Ecological Landscape Alliance Board Member\, in a panel moderated by Mark Fowler\, Grace Farms’ Nature Initiative Director. \n  \nAbout Our Speakers \nPenn Marchael is a Landscape contractor based in Brooklyn and Bedford Hills NY. Throughout his career he has cultivated a deep understanding of horticulture and ecology which he uses to execute successfully vibrant landscapes. Penn has over ten years of experience in project management\, landscape construction\, and maintenance. In those ten years he has installed and maintained meadows from Virginia to Northern New York with a total of over one hundred fifty acres installed and many more maintained and monitored. Previously working with Larry Weaner Landscape Associates\, Eastern Land Management\, JW Townsend and other firms. His present focus is growing his business\, Pennington Grey\, where he aspires to train a new generation of land managers that will lead the landscape industry away from traditional practices and towards a more sustainable and dynamic approach. \nAlexi and Brendan Coffey started Steward at NASA’s Ames Research Center to empower anyone who wants to grow plants to do so with confidence and ease in their own home. Inspired by the idea of partnering with nature to improve health and transform the spaces we live\, work\, and play in\, they’re building their company in New York\, with an extraordinary team of botanists\, horticulturalists\, and technologists around the world. \nMark Fowler is a National Geographic Channel filmmaker and Emmy-nominated wildlife television host who grew up in New Canaan\, Connecticut. In addition to his film work\, he serves as the Vice President of Wildlife and Conservation at the Explorers Club. Mark graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Environmental Studies. He devotes his career to preserving the natural world\, restoring endangered species\, combatting wildlife trafficking\, and inspiring the public to experience the awe and wonder of nature.  Mark serves as Nature Initiative Director for Grace Farms Foundation. \nAbout Our Work: \nEarth Day serves as an important reminder that we are all responsible for the preservation and restoration of our ecosystems and the habitats where we thrive alongside the natural world. People around the globe come together to learn about our environment\, the climate\, and the importance of restoration. \nAt Grace Farms we believe in nature’s ability to heal itself and our own potential to come together as a community to restore our ecosystems\, support biodiversity\, and create a more resilient future for our planet. \nThis Earth Day\, join us in being a part of the solution.

SUMMARY:Hope Over Hate | Inspiring Allyship for Asian American Communities
DESCRIPTION:“Just as hate can come from all colors and creeds\, so can love. And helping those who are in need is just one way we can show our love\, allyship and compassion for one another. It’s a valuable reminder that we can all be helpers.” \n– Actor Daniel Dae Kim\n  \nOver the past year\, more than 3\,800 anti-Asian racist incidents were reported to Stop AAPI Hate\, representing only a fraction of the discrimination faced by the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. SUMMARY:The Analects of Confucius with Professor Stephen Angle
DESCRIPTION:LIVE ZOOM EVENT \n“Confucianism is about being a good person by emphasizing the virtues that go together with creating a society that’s harmonious […] each individual does better when people around us are doing better.” – Prof. Angle\n\nJoin us for a conversation with Author and Professor Stephen Angle and Dr. Matthew Croasmun about the Analects of Confucius. A Professor of East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University focusing on human rights\, politics\, and ethics both in China and globally\,  Prof. Angle views Confucianism not as some ancient\, abstract wisdom but something very much alive\, with values that reflect our needs today. For him\, benevolence and harmony with support for gender equality is the best way to realize Confucian values in our current context. \nOne of the foundational texts of Life Worth Living\, a seven-week course founded at Yale University and now taught both online and on site at Grace Farms Foundation\, the Analects have helped people for centuries in defining the shape of flourishing life. This session is aimed at helping those new to Confucianism find their way into its wisdom–Prof. Angle is adept at drawing the modern Western reader into these ancient texts.

SUMMARY:River Retreat Launch from the Faith Initiative
DESCRIPTION:The River Retreat offers a self-directed way to encounter the faith initiative and its core question: what is the shape of flourishing life?  Completed at an individual pace\, over the course of a couple of hours\, a whole day\, or longer\, it inspires insights about priorities\, relationships\, and visions of a life worthy of our shared humanity. Guests are encouraged to return and experience the retreat multiple times\, as a discipline of discovery to listen for new pieces of wisdom\, and consider what is truly worth wanting. \nJoin Faith Initiative Director Dr. Matthew Croasmun and Faith Initiative Coordinator Katie Grosh for an introduction to The River Retreat at 2:30 pm in the West Barn before setting out on your personal reflection. \nBooklets are available throughout the year in the West Barn Welcome Center.
