SUMMARY:Music at Grace Farms | Arlen Hlusko\, cello
DESCRIPTION:Canadian cellist and Grace Farms Artist-in-Residence Arlen Hlusko presents a winter recital\, “InCommon Folk\,”  inspired by the idea of community music. Developed for Grace Farms\, this one-of-a-kind program offers an exploration into how music responds to the trials and tribulations of life\, and helps bring people together in community. \nWith music spanning Appalachian folk songs\, German hymns\, jazz standards\, and thoughtful improvisations\, this moving program weaves familiar tunes with pieces not yet heard— and old favorites shared in surprising new ways. At the heart of the evening is the world premiere of Wilton Songs\, a new three-movement suite for solo cello by Pulitzer Prize finalist Timo Andres\, commissioned by Grace Farms and written for Hlusko. \nProgram \nTraditional\, arr Frankie Carr: Improvisation on Little Birdie\nMark Summer: Lo\, How a Rose E’er Blooming\n*Timo Andres: Wilton Songs \n\nFrankie and Johnny\nPoor Stranger\nTen Thousand Miles\n\nTraditional/Charles A Tindley\, arr Kenji Bunch: We Shall Overcome \nMeredith Monk: Cello Talk\nPaul V Cortez: Lotus Petals Unfolding\n*Traditional\, arr Frankie Carr: Scarborough Fair\n*Irving Berlin\, arr Arlen Hlusko: Blue Skies\nColeridge-Taylor Perkinson: Lamentations: Black/Folk Song Suite\nIII. She is “capable of playing with great delicacy but also fearlessness; regardless of the character of the material\, she executes it with authority and conviction […] and open-hearted expression is present throughout” (Textura). Cellist of the Bang on a Can All-Stars sextet (extolled by the New York Times for “combining the power and punch of a rock band with the precision and clarity of a chamber ensemble”)\, Arlen regularly performs with other ensembles\, including Manhattan Chamber Players\, The Knights\, and Dolce Suono Ensemble\, and is a member of the Harry Chapin Band and recent alumna of the Curtis Institute of Music and Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect. \nIn 2025-6\, she will be the inaugural musician “Artist-in-Residence” at Grace Farms in New Canaan\, CT. Interested in a wide array of music\, she has collaborated closely with artists from Jordi Savall to Midori to Meredith Monk to David Byrne\, and is a Grammy-award winner for her collaboration with The Crossing\, as well as a laureate of several competitions. Arlen has been featured on CBC’s “30 Under 30\,” and is a Larsen Artist. She has debuted with the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, BBC Concert Orchestra\, and the Calgary Philharmonic\, among others\, and has been invited to several pre-eminent chamber music festivals\, including Spoleto USA\, Tippet Rise\, Bay Chamber Concerts\, and Music from Angel Fire. Committed to using her music to connect with and serve her community\, Arlen founded her own interactive chamber music concert series\, Philadelphia Performances for Autism\, and is involved with numerous communities\, including Carnegie Hall’s “Musical Connections” at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. \n

A portion of With Every Fiber was adapted and included in the Intelligens CANON at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia\, curated by Carlo Ratti\, open through November 2025. \nMaterials Studio is for ages 4 – 11 with adult caregivers. This is free and included with daily registration.

SUMMARY:Journey into the World of Tea | White and Green Teas
DESCRIPTION:Step into the Pavilion to explore and taste the differences between the white and green teas. \nLed by Tea Expert Frank Kwei\, this tranquil and in-depth exploration of tea offers guests a taste of notable varietals from cultures around the world\, with demonstrations and more. \n  \nAbout Frank Kwei\nFrank currently serves in the role of Tea Expert and Educator focusing on special projects and tea programs at Grace Farms. He has been with Grace Farms Foundation since its inception\, starting as the Director of Hospitality where he served as a welcoming ambassador for Grace Farms. In that role\, he often provided a first introduction to Grace Farms and its work by pausing over tea in the Pavilion\, a reflective space in the River building with 360-degree views of natural landscapes. \nIn his current role\, Frank is Grace Farms’ resident Tea Expert\, where he welcomes the public with a simple cup of tea and invites them into a deeper appreciation of the intentionality of SANAA’s architecture and the impact of the Foundation’s work to advance good in the world. \nBefore joining Grace Farms\, Frank co-founded and managed a boutique tea company based in Brooklyn\, New York\, and spent several years focused on the sourcing and supply chains for tea ingredients. Frank has brought that experience to the Foundation’s work on ethical and sustainable supply chains across sectors\, including tea\, coffee\, food\, and architecture. Frank hosts a wide variety of tea education programs on the vast world of tea\, its history\, and on the ethical and sustainable production of tea and coffee. This serves as a critical entry point to educating people about ethical and sustainable supply chains in other fields.
