SUMMARY:The Ma of Space | How Architecture Creates Change
DESCRIPTION:How can architecture create positive change and foster community? \nJoin award-winning design writer and educator Frances Anderton and Grace Farms Architecture Advisor Toshihiro Oki as they explore the design of JACCC and Grace Farms through the lens of Ma\, the concept referring to the spaces between boundaries intentionally left empty to allow different people\, things\, places\, and experiences to co-exist with less friction between them. \nThis program is co-presented by JACCC and Grace Farms. \n  \nFrances Anderton covers Los Angeles design and architecture in print\, broadcast media\, and public events. She is the author of Common Ground: Multifamily Housing in Los Angeles – which won the 2022 Gold Award for Best Regional Nonfiction from Foreword Reviews\, and co-author of “Awesome and Affordable: Great Housing Now\,” an online resource produced by Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles. For her work educating the public about architecture and urbanism\, she received the Esther McCoy Award from the Architectural Guild of USC School of Architecture. \nToshihiro Oki established his office in New York after working at the office of SANAA / Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa (Pritzker Prize 2010) to build the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City and the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion in Ohio. Since 2009\, he has worked on independent projects. He is licensed to practice architecture in New York and has taught at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture and Princeton University Graduate School of Architecture. \nAbout JACCC\nThe Japanese American Cultural & Community Center weaves Japanese and Japanese American arts and culture into the fabric of our communities. JACCC remains firmly rooted in Little Tokyo\, providing a vital place to build connections between people and cultures\, locally and internationally. Through inclusive programs and authentic experiences\, it continues its living traditions and nurtures the next generation of innovative artists\, culture-bearers\, and thinkers.
