SUMMARY:Beauty and Logic
DESCRIPTION:  \nHow can mathematics be beautiful? Does music have an underlying logic? What does one reveal about the other? \nJoin acclaimed saxophonist\, composer\, and mathematician\, Marcus G. Miller for an unforgettable performance as he leads us through an exploration of these questions. \nA long-time collaborator of Grace Farms Foundation\, Marcus has performed at the Obama White House\, Madison Square Garden\, The World Economic Forum at Davos\, The Montreux Jazz Festival\, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert alongside Jon Batiste\, and at Carnegie Hall. \n  \n“When I first heard Marcus play he was about 8 or 9 years old and I was very impressed. He is undoubtedly one of the most talented musicians that I have heard in my almost 50 years in the music business. As a young composer\, arranger\, producer and musician\, Marcus ranks with the best.” \n— Curtis Hudson: Guitarist\, Producer\, Songwriter (Madonna\, Pure Energy) \n  \nAbout Marcus G. Miller \n \nMarcus Miller began studying saxophone at age nine and developed a passion that put him on stage at 13. With gifts extending beyond music\, he graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Mathematics. After a short stint at a major hedge fund he moved to New York City to pursue music. He soon developed a reputation as a versatile and virtuosic player\, while studying music production and engineering under Grammy-Winning Engineer “Bassy” Bob Brockman (Notorious B.I.G\, Herbie Hancock\, D’Angelo). \nMarcus has performed at the Obama White House\, Madison Square Garden\, The World Economic Forum at Davos\, The Montreux Jazz Festival\, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert alongside Jon Batiste\, and Carnegie Hall. In addition\, he has worked with jazz giants ELEW and Jazzmeia Horn\, as well as major artists like The Fugees and Madonna. \nMarcus maintains his interest in mathematics and physics by giving talks and performances that combine Math and Music. He has been featured at TEDSummit 2019\, TEDxOttawa 2019\, Brown University\, University of Georgia\, and University of Michigan. He hopes to encourage people to become more aware of the potential for mathematics and music to serve as routes to personal\, spiritual\, and community development. \nLearn more at imaginewithmarcus.com

SUMMARY:Books on Faith & Meaning | The Good Life Method with Meghan Sullivan and Paul Blaschko
DESCRIPTION:Join Notre Dame professors Meghan Sullivan and Paul Blaschko to discuss their recent book The Good Life Method. Meghan and Paul teach an influential undergraduate course\, God and the Good Life\, in which they wrestle with the questions about how to live and what makes life meaningful. Based on these teachings\, The Good Life Method invites us to work through issues like what justifies our beliefs\, whether we should practice a religion\, and what sacrifices we should make for others. \n  \nMeghan Sullivan is the Wilsey Family Collegiate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame and serves as Director of the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study. Her research tends to focus on philosophical problems concerning time\, modality\, rational planning\, value theory\, and religious belief (and sometimes all five at once). She has published work in many leading philosophy journals\, including Nous\, Ethics and Philosophical Studies. Her first book — Time Biases — came out with Oxford University Press in summer 2018. \nShe is now writing a monograph on the role love plays in grounding moral\, political and religious reasoning.  It is tentatively entitled Agapism: Moral Responsibility and Our Inner Lives. And with Paul Blaschko\, she has just finished a book on virtue ethics based on the God and the Good Life project. It is called The Good Life Method and will be released nationwide through Penguin Press in January 2022. \n  \nPaul Blaschko is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Philosophy Department at the University of Notre Dame. He is a philosopher and his primary areas of interest are epistemology and action theory. His research focuses on the nature and normative dimensions of deliberative belief formation\, but he’s also interested in theories of practical reason and value\, the philosophy of religion\, and medieval philosophy. \n\nPaul is committed to making philosophy publicly accessible and relevant\, and—in his teaching—he emphasizes innovative course design\, practical relevance\, intellectual formation\, and classroom transparency. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in January of 2019.
