SUMMARY:Connection\, Isolation\, and the Role of Social Media
DESCRIPTION:With 3.5 billion users worldwide spending an average of three hours per day on social networks and messaging\, social media is an undeniable force in our society. But is it helping us to connect to one another or driving a sense of isolation? \nNew York Times Social Media Editor Sona Patel joined Grace Farms Foundation’s Community Initiative Director Karen Kariuki for a conversation about the role that social media plays in communities\, its implications on our ability to connect with one another\, and the importance of social media ethics. \n  \n\n\n  \nAbout Sona Patel \nSona Patel is a Senior Audience Editor for The New York Times and is based in Los Angeles. Her current role is at the intersection of editorial and audience analytics. One of her primary goals is to grow The Times‘s California readership. She also heads The Times‘s efforts around reader-sourced reporting crowdsourcing. Prior to joining The Times\, she worked for The Seattle Times as a social media producer where she was part of the team that won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting. SUMMARY:Books on Faith & Meaning | A Conversation with Dr. Matthew Croasmun
DESCRIPTION:LIVE ZOOM EVENT \nHow do we make meaning of our lives today\, when it feels as though everyone and everything we care about is susceptible to loss? In This Life: Secular Faith and Spiritual Freedom\, Martin Hägglund\, Professor of Comparative Literature at Yale\, argues that it is exactly this sense of fragility and the possibility of loss that make our lives meaningful. As long as we have attachments to lose\, we are susceptible to suffering\, but to be liberated from that risk would also mean losing all sense of genuine care or meaning in our lives. \nJoin us for a Zoom conversation between Faith Initiative Director\, Dr. Matthew Croasmun and Prof. Hägglund\, exploring the tenants of his book. During a time in which we are constantly reminded of the fragility of life\, and in which our sense of loss is so acute\, this will serve as an important reminder that we can always find meaning in our lives. \nOur Books on Faith & Meaning series consists of monthly presentations introducing selections from the Faith & Meaning section of the Grace Farms Library. Spanning multiple religious and philosophical traditions\, both ancient and contemporary\, these texts encourage us to think critically about the meaning in our lives.

SUMMARY:Books on Faith & Meaning A Conversation with Prof Xavier Pickett
DESCRIPTION:LIVE ZOOM EVENT \nJoin us for a Zoom conversation with Faith Initiative Director\, Dr. Matthew Croasmun and Professor Xavier Pickett from NC State University\, exploring Dr. Howard Thurman’s theological treatise\, Jesus and the Disinherited. \nThe Christian faith\, Thurman insists\, has had much to say about how a Christian ought to respond to the suffering of others. But what does the Christian faith have to say to those who are themselves suffering under oppression—to those “with their backs against the wall”? Thurman offers an account of a Jesus whose life was marked by oppression\, a Jesus who grew up under Roman occupation\, knew what it was to have one’s body constantly under threat—one who knew the temptation of fear\, deception\, and hatred\, and nevertheless responded in love. Thurman’s book is a foundational work of non-violent resistance\, but it is also a vivid vision of flourishing life in the face of violent oppression.

SUMMARY:Making Conversation A Discussion with Author Fred Dust
DESCRIPTION:Join Grace Farms Foundation\, UConn Department of Public Policy\, and Leadership Greater Hartford for a virtual discussion with Fred Dust\, former Senior Partner and Global Managing Director at the acclaimed design firm IDEO\, about his book\, Making Conversation. Mr. Dust will be joined by Dr. Mark Overmyer-Velázquez\, Professor of History & Latinx American Studies and Director of the Hartford Campus of the University of Connecticut. \n \n  \n“We all know that leading conversations between groups who don’t see eye to eye is challenging. We’ve needed a road map for making these conversations productive and solutions-oriented\, and now we have one in Making Conversation.” \n—Arianna Huffington\, founder and CEO of Thrive Global \n  \nConversations are one of the most fundamental means of communicating we have as humans. At their best\, conversations are unconstrained\, authentic and open—two or more people sharing thoughts and ideas in a way that bridges our individual experiences\, achieves a common goal. At their worst\, they foster misunderstanding\, frustration\, and obscure our real intentions. \nIn his practice as a designer\, Fred Dust began to approach conversations differently. After years of trying to broker communication between colleagues and clients\, he came to believe there had to be a way to design conversation itself with intention and purpose\, while retaining its artful and playful qualities. Making Conversation codifies what he learned and outlines the four elements essential to successful exchanges: Commitment\, Creative Listening\, Clarity\, and Context. Learn how these four elements\, taken together\, form a set of resources anyone can use to be more deliberate and purposeful in making conversations work\, and examine how we can come together to tackle difficult topics and bridge our individual experiences to achieve better communication. \n  \nClick here to purchase Making Conversation \n  \nAbout Fred Dust \nFred Dust is the founder of Making Conversation\, LLC and works at the intersection of business\, society and creativity. As a designer\, author\, educator\, consultant\, trustee\, and advisor to social and business leaders\, he is one of the world’s most original thinkers\, applying the craft and optimism of human-centered design to the intractable challenges we face today. Using the methodology in his forthcoming book Making Conversation\, he has been working as the Senior Dialogue Designer with The Rockefeller Foundation to explore the future of pressing global needs; and with The Einhorn Collaborative and other foundations to host constructive dialogue with leaders ranging from David Brooks\, Reverend Jenn Bailey\, and Vivek Murthy to rebuild human connection in a climate of widespread polarization\, cynicism and disruption. He is also proud to be faculty at the Esalen Institute. \nAs a former Global Managing Partner at the acclaimed international design firm IDEO\, Fred works with leaders and change agents to unlock the creative potential of business\, government\, education\, and philanthropic organizations. \n  \nAbout Mark Overmyer-Velázquez \nDr. Mark Overmyer-Velázquez is the Campus Director of the University Connecticut-Hartford and Professor of History and Latinx Studies. He oversees the university’s newest regional campus and works with colleagues and Hartford partners to build bridges between academic and city communities to support collaborative\, engaged learning and research. Dr. Overmyer-Velázquez earned his Ph.D. at Yale University in Latin America and U.S. Latino history and has dedicated his publishing\, teaching\, and community activism to those intersecting fields. He has been a Fulbright scholar and visiting lecturer at universities in Mexico\, Chile\, and China and recently was Research Professor at the School of Human Rights and Political Science at the University of Jordan\, Amman. The first Latinx elected official in West Hartford\, he currently serves on a number of Boards of Directors in the Hartford region. In 2019\, he received the Vision Award in Social Justice from the Charter Oak Cultural Center. He keeps his commitment to the arts by playing keyboard in the UConn faculty band\, Blues without Borders. \n  \nMore Praise for Making Conversation \n“Fred Dust has helped some of the world’s most powerful people have more productive conversations\, and reading this book feels like being engaged in a direct conversation with him. Drawing on his fascinating experiences as a senior leader at IDEO\, his design thinking expertise\, and his architecture background\, he offers actionable advice on how we can all stop talking past each other.” \n— Adam Grant\, New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals and host of the TED podcast WorkLife \n  \n“This book offers guidance for having the most productive and engaged conversations as we move forward in a world that desperately needs them. Smart\, grounded in deep experience\, and immediately useful for our moment\, Dust’s book insists on this: Have the conversations that count.” \n— Sherry Turkle\, professor of the social studies of science and technology\, MIT\, and author of Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age \n  \n“Improving the state of the world depends on conversations that bridge divides\, create solutions\, and drive action. The stakes are high for having the best conversations possible\, but we leave conversation to instinct\, not technique. The foundation has been working with the practices of Fred’s book since the early days of 2020. Fred has continuously helped us craft more effective conversations with his easy-to-apply practices. This brilliant book is required reading for anyone who talks to anyone.” \n— Zia Khan\, senior vice president for innovation at the Rockefeller Foundation \n  \n“I greatly appreciate Fred’s keen intellect and\, frankly\, just the fun of working with him. His book on how to rethink the hardest conversations in the world personally captures what it is like to work alongside a person who I now consider a friend.” \n— Jonathan McBride\, former director of the presidential personnel office under Barack Obama \n  \n“While I’ve been fortunate to see Fred’s work on conversation and dialogue firsthand\, I was moved to see how much of his practice connects back to things from his childhood: Storytelling from his grandparents. Listening from his mother. It’s clear he’s been doing this work his entire life.” \n— Jacqueline Novogratz\, CEO of Acumen \n  \n\nPresented in Collaboration with:

SUMMARY:Life Worth Living | 7-Week Course
DESCRIPTION:What is the shape of a flourishing life? Join us for a 7-week online academic course led by Dr. Matthew Croasmun\, Director of the Life Worth Living Program at the Yale Center for Faith & Culture and Faith Initiative Director at Grace Farms Foundation. The course engages a range of philosophical and religious traditions to facilitate conversation on questions of meaning and purpose in our lives. \nEach week\, participants read a set of religious and philosophical texts (no more than 30 pages) advocating different tradition’s answers to these questions. During class participants discuss what they’ve read—putting Confucius in conversation with Alice Walker\, or Toni Morrison in dialogue with the Rabbis—with a goal to better understand the stakes of the questions and the trade-offs made by different answers. Participants then write their own (provisional) answers to the question in light of what they’ve read and discussed\, and share what they’ve written so they can continue to learn from one another’s insights. A more in depth description of the course is available here\, with more detail about the format below. \nThis course is currently full\, but we are always assessing the demand for additional course offerings. Please enter your information on our Life Worth Living Waitlist to be contacted directly about future courses. \nLife Worth Living class will be offered as an online course through Zoom and Canvas\, an online course management platform.  We will meet weekly face-to-face over Zoom for a two-hour session\, including full group discussions and conversations in smaller breakout rooms.  In between class meetings each week\, course participants can access PDFs of the readings\, short video lectures\, and discussion forums on Canvas. \nAfter receiving confirmation of application and being accepted into the course\, participants will be instructed on how to register and receive the Zoom login information and an invitation to join the Grace Farms’ Life Worth Living Canvas site.  We understand that online coursework will be new to many of our participants\, and we will be readily available to answer tech-related questions. The image below provides some insight into your interaction with the course management platform. \nWhile we continue to advance good behind closed doors\, we strive to maintain the Grace Farms spirit of hospitality.  All participating students will receive a course welcome package in the mail\, and will be invited to attend a special River Retreat reflection when the Grace Farms building reopens to the public. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:The Analects of Confucius with Professor Stephen Angle
DESCRIPTION:LIVE ZOOM EVENT \n“Confucianism is about being a good person by emphasizing the virtues that go together with creating a society that’s harmonious […] each individual does better when people around us are doing better.” – Prof. Angle\n\nJoin us for a conversation with Author and Professor Stephen Angle and Dr. Matthew Croasmun about the Analects of Confucius. A Professor of East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University focusing on human rights\, politics\, and ethics both in China and globally\,  Prof. Angle views Confucianism not as some ancient\, abstract wisdom but something very much alive\, with values that reflect our needs today. For him\, benevolence and harmony with support for gender equality is the best way to realize Confucian values in our current context. \nOne of the foundational texts of Life Worth Living\, a seven-week course founded at Yale University and now taught both online and on site at Grace Farms Foundation\, the Analects have helped people for centuries in defining the shape of flourishing life. This session is aimed at helping those new to Confucianism find their way into its wisdom–Prof. Angle is adept at drawing the modern Western reader into these ancient texts. \n\nOur Books on Faith & Meaning series consists of monthly presentations introducing selections from the Faith & Meaning section of the Grace Farms Library. Spanning multiple religious and philosophical traditions\, both ancient and contemporary\, these texts encourage us to think critically about the meaning in our lives.
