SUMMARY:Music at Grace Farms | Arlen Hlusko\, cello
DESCRIPTION:Canadian cellist and Grace Farms Artist-in-Residence Arlen Hlusko presents a winter recital\, “InCommon Folk\,”  inspired by the idea of community music. Developed for Grace Farms\, this one-of-a-kind program offers an exploration into how music responds to the trials and tribulations of life\, and helps bring people together in community. \nWith music spanning Appalachian folk songs\, German hymns\, jazz standards\, and thoughtful improvisations\, this moving program weaves familiar tunes with pieces not yet heard— and old favorites shared in surprising new ways. At the heart of the evening is the world premiere of Wilton Songs\, a new three-movement suite for solo cello by Pulitzer Prize finalist Timo Andres\, commissioned by Grace Farms and written for Hlusko. \nProgram \nTraditional\, arr Frankie Carr: Improvisation on Little Birdie\nMark Summer: Lo\, How a Rose E’er Blooming\n*Timo Andres: Wilton Songs \n\nFrankie and Johnny\nPoor Stranger\nTen Thousand Miles\n\nTraditional/Charles A Tindley\, arr Kenji Bunch: We Shall Overcome \nMeredith Monk: Cello Talk\nPaul V Cortez: Lotus Petals Unfolding\n*Traditional\, arr Frankie Carr: Scarborough Fair\n*Irving Berlin\, arr Arlen Hlusko: Blue Skies\nColeridge-Taylor Perkinson: Lamentations: Black/Folk Song Suite\nIII. She is “capable of playing with great delicacy but also fearlessness; regardless of the character of the material\, she executes it with authority and conviction […] and open-hearted expression is present throughout” (Textura). Cellist of the Bang on a Can All-Stars sextet (extolled by the New York Times for “combining the power and punch of a rock band with the precision and clarity of a chamber ensemble”)\, Arlen regularly performs with other ensembles\, including Manhattan Chamber Players\, The Knights\, and Dolce Suono Ensemble\, and is a member of the Harry Chapin Band and recent alumna of the Curtis Institute of Music and Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect. \nIn 2025-6\, she will be the inaugural musician “Artist-in-Residence” at Grace Farms in New Canaan\, CT. As Broadway grappled with the loss of an entire generation of artists\, Tony and Grammy-nominated Michael McElroy (founder of the Broadway Inspirational Voices) saw in the community a profound need for hope\, unity\, and inspiration. He envisioned an organization where professional artists would come together and volunteer their gift to provide comfort\, joy\, and the promise of a better day–and as a result\, The Broadway Gospel Choir was born. This magical synergy of authentic Gospel soul and Broadway bravura was re-imagined as the Broadway Inspirational Voices in 1999 and they have been the theatre community’s center of support and celebration ever since. In 2019\, The Tony Awards Administration Committee presented the Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre to four outstanding contributors to the Broadway industry\, and Broadway Inspirational Voices was a recipient. The Tony Honor was a resounding endorsement of Broadway Inspirational Voices’s enduring work and impact and in celebration of 25 years of service. In 2020\, McElroy hand picked composer/singer Allen René Louis to become the new Artistic Director for Broadway Inspirational Voices. Broadway Inspirational Voices’s diverse membership has represented over 140 Broadway shows since its inception. \n  \nKnow Before You Go\nPlease review the day-of details below to help you plan your visit: \n \n  \nMusic at Grace Farms\nExperience Grace Farms’ distinctive\, daylit acoustic music performances in the glass-enclosed Sanctuary\, against the backdrop of 80 acres of natural landscapes. SUMMARY:SOLD OUTMusic at Grace Farms | Mon Rovîa
DESCRIPTION:Mon Rovîa presents a concert of peace and healing in a special program for Grace Farms\, organized on the United Nations International Day of Tolerance. \nMon Rovîa reflects journeys of humanity through his Afro Appalachian music as a singer and songwriter\, and from his own experiences moving from the Liberia during the country’s civil war to the United States. He was named as one of Spotify’s 2024 Juniper Artists to Watch\, has been featured in the GRAMMY Museum’s New York City program series\, and has sold out every headline show to date\, including Bonnaroo\, Austin City Limits\, and Newport Folk Festival. \n75-minute performance\, no intermission. Doors open at 1:15 pm. \n “Tolerance is much more than passively accepting the other. It brings obligations to act\, and must be taught\, nurtured and defended.  Tolerance requires investment by States in people\, and in the fulfillment of their full potential through education\, inclusion and opportunities. This means building societies founded on respect for human rights\, where fear\, distrust and marginalization are supplanted by pluralism\, participation and respect for differences.” \n– United Nations \nAbout Mon Rovîa\n“I’m Mon\, born in Mon Rovia\, Liberia. My life can be summed up by being born into a civil war\, escaping the life of a child soldier\, rescued by the hands of missionaries. Spent a lot of my developmental years living in a variety of places with a number of life experiences. And then layered on top of all of this is the assimilation I felt being a transracially adopted refugee. My music in a nutshell is a culmination of these experiences blended with the empathy I feel for the experiences with others. The mission of my music is to heal with others – with every nation and tongue\, in due time.” \n  \nMusic at Grace Farms\nExperience Grace Farms’ distinctive\, daylit acoustic music performances in the glass-enclosed Sanctuary\, against the backdrop of 80 acres of natural landscapes. SUMMARY:Beauty & Logic | Resonance
DESCRIPTION:“Everything Dances”\nThis April\, explore resonance\, a word layered with social and relational meaning. In physics\, it appears as a division by zero; in music\, it gives rise to phenomena including the mechanics of horns and acoustical feedback. \nBeauty and Logic is a unique math-meets-music experience exploring the sounds we love and the equations that make them possible. These educational concerts\, fusing bold musical performances with brief dives into the math behind the sounds and vibrations\, are hosted by Grace Farms Music Director\, saxophonist\, and trained mathematician\, Marcus G. Miller\, who performs with this band\, IWM. \n\nMarcus Miller began studying saxophone at age nine and developed a passion that put him on stage at 13. With gifts extending beyond music\, he graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Mathematics. After a short stint at a major hedge fund he moved to New York City to pursue music. He soon developed a reputation as a versatile and virtuosic player\, while studying music production and engineering under Grammy-Winning Engineer “Bassy” Bob Brockman (Notorious B.I.G\, Herbie Hancock\, D’Angelo). \nMarcus has performed at the Obama White House\, Madison Square Garden\, The World Economic Forum at Davos\, The Montreux Jazz Festival\, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert alongside Jon Batiste\, and Carnegie Hall. In addition\, he has worked with jazz giants ELEW and Jazzmeia Horn\, as well as major artists like The Fugees and Madonna. \nMarcus maintains his interest in mathematics and physics by giving talks and performances that combine Math and Music. He has been featured at TEDSummit 2019\, TEDxOttawa 2019\, Brown University\, University of Georgia\, and University of Michigan. He hopes to encourage people to become more aware of the potential for mathematics and music to serve as routes to personal\, spiritual\, and community development.
