SUMMARY:In Pursuit of Flourishing Life | Is College the Key?

Eshoo\, Head of School at King School\, and Dr. Frank Bartolomeo\, Director of Adolescent Services at Silver Hill Hospital\, lead a discussion about how the college prep and application processes can reveal and shape both parents’ and students’ visions of flourishing life. \nAs colleges become ever more competitive\, the admissions process can generate an enormous amount of pressure and anxiety. In the midst of these pressures\, the initially motivating desire to pursue a college education – a flourishing life – can be subverted. Hear from different perspectives and explore how we can better help young people enter this next stage of their lives equipped to flourish not just in their endeavors\, but as human beings.

SUMMARY:Books on Faith & Meaning | A Conversation with Dr. Matthew Croasmun
DESCRIPTION:LIVE ZOOM EVENT \nHow do we make meaning of our lives today\, when it feels as though everyone and everything we care about is susceptible to loss? In This Life: Secular Faith and Spiritual Freedom\, Martin Hägglund\, Professor of Comparative Literature at Yale\, argues that it is exactly this sense of fragility and the possibility of loss that make our lives meaningful. As long as we have attachments to lose\, we are susceptible to suffering\, but to be liberated from that risk would also mean losing all sense of genuine care or meaning in our lives. \nJoin us for a Zoom conversation between Faith Initiative Director\, Dr. Matthew Croasmun and Prof. Hägglund\, exploring the tenants of his book. During a time in which we are constantly reminded of the fragility of life\, and in which our sense of loss is so acute\, this will serve as an important reminder that we can always find meaning in our lives. \nOur Books on Faith & Meaning series consists of monthly presentations introducing selections from the Faith & Meaning section of the Grace Farms Library. Spanning multiple religious and philosophical traditions\, both ancient and contemporary\, these texts encourage us to think critically about the meaning in our lives.

SUMMARY:Books on Faith & Meaning A Conversation with Willie James Jennings

In After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging (Theological Education between the Times)\, Prof. Willie James Jennings describes insights gained from his extensive experience in theological education\, examines how ideas of whiteness distort our understanding of community\, and proposes new ways of belonging to one another. \nJoin us on November 17th at 12 pm for a Zoom conversation between Faith Initiative Director\, Dr. Matthew Croasmun and Willie Jennings. Spanning multiple religious and philosophical traditions\, both ancient and contemporary\, these texts encourage us to think critically about the meaning in our lives.

SUMMARY:Books on Faith & Meaning A Conversation with Prof Xavier Pickett
DESCRIPTION:LIVE ZOOM EVENT \nJoin us for a Zoom conversation with Faith Initiative Director\, Dr. Matthew Croasmun and Professor Xavier Pickett from NC State University\, exploring Dr. Howard Thurman’s theological treatise\, Jesus and the Disinherited. \nThe Christian faith\, Thurman insists\, has had much to say about how a Christian ought to respond to the suffering of others. But what does the Christian faith have to say to those who are themselves suffering under oppression—to those “with their backs against the wall”? Thurman offers an account of a Jesus whose life was marked by oppression\, a Jesus who grew up under Roman occupation\, knew what it was to have one’s body constantly under threat—one who knew the temptation of fear\, deception\, and hatred\, and nevertheless responded in love. Thurman’s book is a foundational work of non-violent resistance\, but it is also a vivid vision of flourishing life in the face of violent oppression.

SUMMARY:Life Worth Living | 7-Week Course
DESCRIPTION:What is the shape of a flourishing life? Join us for a 7-week online academic course led by Dr. Matthew Croasmun\, Director of the Life Worth Living Program at the Yale Center for Faith & Culture and Faith Initiative Director at Grace Farms Foundation. The course engages a range of philosophical and religious traditions to facilitate conversation on questions of meaning and purpose in our lives. \nEach week\, participants read a set of religious and philosophical texts (no more than 30 pages) advocating different tradition’s answers to these questions. During class participants discuss what they’ve read—putting Confucius in conversation with Alice Walker\, or Toni Morrison in dialogue with the Rabbis—with a goal to better understand the stakes of the questions and the trade-offs made by different answers. Participants then write their own (provisional) answers to the question in light of what they’ve read and discussed\, and share what they’ve written so they can continue to learn from one another’s insights. A more in depth description of the course is available here\, with more detail about the format below. \nThis course is currently full\, but we are always assessing the demand for additional course offerings. Please enter your information on our Life Worth Living Waitlist to be contacted directly about future courses. \nLife Worth Living class will be offered as an online course through Zoom and Canvas\, an online course management platform.  We will meet weekly face-to-face over Zoom for a two-hour session\, including full group discussions and conversations in smaller breakout rooms.  In between class meetings each week\, course participants can access PDFs of the readings\, short video lectures\, and discussion forums on Canvas. \nAfter receiving confirmation of application and being accepted into the course\, participants will be instructed on how to register and receive the Zoom login information and an invitation to join the Grace Farms’ Life Worth Living Canvas site.  We understand that online coursework will be new to many of our participants\, and we will be readily available to answer tech-related questions. The image below provides some insight into your interaction with the course management platform. \nWhile we continue to advance good behind closed doors\, we strive to maintain the Grace Farms spirit of hospitality.  All participating students will receive a course welcome package in the mail\, and will be invited to attend a special River Retreat reflection when the Grace Farms building reopens to the public. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:The Analects of Confucius with Professor Stephen Angle
DESCRIPTION:LIVE ZOOM EVENT \n“Confucianism is about being a good person by emphasizing the virtues that go together with creating a society that’s harmonious […] each individual does better when people around us are doing better.” – Prof. Angle\n\nJoin us for a conversation with Author and Professor Stephen Angle and Dr. Matthew Croasmun about the Analects of Confucius. A Professor of East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University focusing on human rights\, politics\, and ethics both in China and globally\,  Prof. Angle views Confucianism not as some ancient\, abstract wisdom but something very much alive\, with values that reflect our needs today. For him\, benevolence and harmony with support for gender equality is the best way to realize Confucian values in our current context. \nOne of the foundational texts of Life Worth Living\, a seven-week course founded at Yale University and now taught both online and on site at Grace Farms Foundation\, the Analects have helped people for centuries in defining the shape of flourishing life. This session is aimed at helping those new to Confucianism find their way into its wisdom–Prof. Angle is adept at drawing the modern Western reader into these ancient texts. \n\nOur Books on Faith & Meaning series consists of monthly presentations introducing selections from the Faith & Meaning section of the Grace Farms Library. Spanning multiple religious and philosophical traditions\, both ancient and contemporary\, these texts encourage us to think critically about the meaning in our lives.
