SUMMARY:Modernism Inc. | a Documentary on Eliot Noyes presented by Grace Farms and Architecture & Design Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Modernism\, Inc. (75 minutes\, Director: Jason Cohn) tells the story of one of New Canaan’s most influential architects and a transitional figure in American design\, Eliot Noyes. Educated by Walter Gropius at Harvard\, Noyes brought a not-before-seen modernist design approach to corporate America. His impact on companies like IBM and Mobil paved the way for Apple and many design-conscious brands we know today. Noyes also built many houses in New Canaan\, including one in 1954\, where he raised his family. The house is an outstanding example of 1950’s Modernist residential design and is still owned by his three children.  \nModernism\, Inc. had its US premiere in October 2023 at the Architecture & Design Film Festival (ADFF) in New York. It is currently screening at festivals around the world including Modernism Week 2024 in Palm Springs. \n\nThe screening will be followed by a Q&A with ADFF Festival Director Kyle Bergman\, director Jason Cohn\, IBM Corporate Archivist Jamie Martin\, and architect and son of Eliot Noyes\, Frederick Noyes. The evening is hosted by Grace Farms Architecture Advisor Toshihiro Oki.\n\n\n  \nDoors open at 5 pm. Program will begin at 5:30 pm.\n  \n\n\n\n\n\npresented in collaboration with

SUMMARY:Conversations in Architecture | A River of Glass
DESCRIPTION:A common thread between the modernists of the past and the River building at Grace Farms is the use of glass. \nJoin us for a conversation about architectural glass between Grace Farms Architecture Advisor Toshihiro Oki and Michael Ra\, coming from Hong Kong as one of the Founding Principals at Front Inc.\, Founding Director of Via\, and Co-Chair of the Elefront initiative. \nFront Inc. was the project partner responsible for the design of the glass envelope used in the creation of the over 200 individually-sized\, curved glass panels at Grace Farms. \nTheir conversation explores the innovative and distinct glass system created to complement SANAA’s design concept; the creation of customized glass seals; and the process of sourcing of glass that meets high-quality fabrication\, energy\, and performance criteria. Ra will also speak about other projects they’ve worked on with SANAA projects over the past 20 years. \n  \nConversations in Architecture is an ongoing program series welcoming leading architects\, designers\, professors\, and practitioners to reflect on how architecture can act as a driver of humanitarian change through sustainable design\, forced labor-free buildings\, creative construction\, and more. This series is hosted by Toshihiro Oki. \n  \n\nThis event is approved for AIA CES 1.5 LU

SUMMARY:Beauty & Logic | Resonance
DESCRIPTION:“Everything Dances”\nThis April\, explore resonance\, a word layered with social and relational meaning. In physics\, it appears as a division by zero; in music\, it gives rise to phenomena including the mechanics of horns and acoustical feedback. \nBeauty and Logic is a unique math-meets-music experience exploring the sounds we love and the equations that make them possible. These educational concerts\, fusing bold musical performances with brief dives into the math behind the sounds and vibrations\, are hosted by Grace Farms Music Director\, saxophonist\, and trained mathematician\, Marcus G. Miller\, who performs with this band\, IWM. \n\nMarcus Miller began studying saxophone at age nine and developed a passion that put him on stage at 13. With gifts extending beyond music\, he graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Mathematics. After a short stint at a major hedge fund he moved to New York City to pursue music. He soon developed a reputation as a versatile and virtuosic player\, while studying music production and engineering under Grammy-Winning Engineer “Bassy” Bob Brockman (Notorious B.I.G\, Herbie Hancock\, D’Angelo). \nMarcus has performed at the Obama White House\, Madison Square Garden\, The World Economic Forum at Davos\, The Montreux Jazz Festival\, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert alongside Jon Batiste\, and Carnegie Hall. In addition\, he has worked with jazz giants ELEW and Jazzmeia Horn\, as well as major artists like The Fugees and Madonna. \nMarcus maintains his interest in mathematics and physics by giving talks and performances that combine Math and Music. He has been featured at TEDSummit 2019\, TEDxOttawa 2019\, Brown University\, University of Georgia\, and University of Michigan. He hopes to encourage people to become more aware of the potential for mathematics and music to serve as routes to personal\, spiritual\, and community development.

This July\, he’s headed to Grace Farms for a lively summer concert the entire family can enjoy! \nStep into this rich\, quintessentially American genre — then let loose and dance in the Sanctuary aisles. SUMMARY:Beauty & Logic for High School Students
DESCRIPTION:How does the basic trigonometry of waves\, built from simple circles and right triangles\, give rise to hit songs? Join us for an extraordinary adaptation of Beauty & Logic\, where music meets math\, led by Grace Farms Music Director\, saxophonist\, and mathematician Marcus G. Miller. \nStudents will dive into the fascinating world of sound technology\, exploring how real-world sounds are captured\, processed by a computer\, and then brought to life again. Miller will unravel the concept of superposition by breaking down popular songs into their core components\, revealing how they relate mathematically and why audio files sometimes sound like “fuzzy blocks.” \nThis hands-on journey will transform how students interact with the music they love and inspire them to learn more about mathematics! \n  \nTo register a school group registration\, click here. \n  \nAbout Beauty & Logic\nBeauty and Logic is a unique math-meets-music experience fusing bold musical performances with brief dives into the math behind the sounds and vibrations. SUMMARY:James Florio's Studio at Grace Farms
DESCRIPTION:Step into the studio life of architectural photographer James Florio. \nFlorio is Grace Farms’ Artist-in-Residence\, visiting throughout the seasons to build a body of work composed on large format film. Encounter Florio’s creative process in the Grace Farms Library\, which will temporarily transform to display his photography\, along with curated\, tactile elements representing his Montana studio. \nLarge format film removes barriers between the viewer and image to capture the world as it is: simple yet complex\, imperfect but beautiful. During his residency\, Florio explores how the River building—with glass walls that remove barriers between people and nature—transforms with the landscape across the seasons. \nAbout James Florio\nJames Florio is a Montana-based photographer focused on the built environment and the life surrounding it. He works slowly whenever possible\, visiting a place repeatedly to gain a greater understanding of it and to deliver a thoughtful and profound interpretation. Using the camera as a means to investigate\, understand\, and document\, he prefers to work with large format film for its depth and deliberation. In 2022\, he was awarded the Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award. \nHis work is featured in various publications and books\, including the MAS Context book\, Radical Logic\, On the Work of Ensamble Studio\, the two upcoming books\, FOG and Thirtysix Views of Inverted Portal\, the Divisare Book set\, Structures of Landscape-James Florio\, Gio Ponti in the American West\, Kengo Kuma: Portland Japanese Garden\, National Geographic Traveler\, Domus\, Architectural Record\, Modern in Denver\, and others.
